Life Is Precious

The desire to make this brooch came after a swim in the Mediterranean Sea.

Seeing jellyfish being scooped out from the sea and thrown into the bin has created a stir in my mind. I know they sting, but there seems to be something intrinsically wrong about binning a life.

To live in harmony is easy on paper, I was terrified to go into the water after spotting those half transparent bodies with stinging tentacles. But there must be a way, there must be.

Jellyfish's earliest known relative is Auroralumina Attenboroughii - lived at a time known as the Ediacaran period (635 to 538 to million years ago). They have been around for a lot longer than we do.

Hand carved white jade (45g), sapphires (16.25ct), sterling silver.
